AOC, LLC ("AOC") resulted from the purchase by The Alpha Corporation of Tennessee of Owens Corning's 50% share from their 1994 joint venture in Alpha/Owens Corning. Plants are strategically located in Collierville, TN, Lakeland, FL, Perris, CA, Valparaiso, IN, Guelph, Ontario, Canada, and Mexico City, Mexico. All AOC-owned facilities are ISO 9001:2002 certified. Since 1998, AOC has purchased Hawk International Distributors, located in Essex, UK and renamed Composites Material Supplies. CMS is a full line composites distribution facility located in Essex. Other global supply facilities are located in the United Kingdom, Slovakia, Poland, India, Vietnam and Thailand.Today AOC is the largest unsaturated polyester resin manufacturer in North America and one of the five largest in the world. It manufactures polyester and vinyl resins for a large variety of industries, including but not limited to: transportation, marine, tub/shower, continuous panel, cast polymer and solid surface, pipes and tanks, consumer products, utilizing both open and closed molding processes. Complementing resin manufacturing are related product groups: gel coats, pigment dispersions and additives.
AOC's formation is founded on the union of two diverse organizations: The Alpha Corporation Resins Division and Owens Corning Resins & Coatings Division. Each brought substantial expertise to the 1994 joint venture. Separately they were ranked as the 2nd and 4th in the resin industry. Combined they became the largest in North America. The rise was and still is attributed to the unique cultures found within each organization. The Alpha Corporation brings an entrepreneurial spirit and "can do" attitude to the manufacturing precision and corporate organization developed by Owens Corning.
Leaning on the innovativeness and entrepreneurial nature of its founders, AOC found or created markets for its products. The Company found its competitive niche in providing technologically advanced products by using its extensive R&D facilities. Many of the inventions are alive 50 years later, such as underground fiberglass storage tanks (the 100, 000th was produced in 1985).
Ingenuity found its way into all aspects of the organization. Another of AOC's attributes was its advanced manufacturing ability. It became a valuable resource as AOC became a trusted supplier to the demanding automotive industry. Mass production techniques born in the auto industry depended on suppliers never varying from very tight tolerances. This then became the credo for all AOC operations.
As the transportation market grew, so did its complexity for resin suppliers. There was just no margin for variance in the chemistries of shipments. Through the ingenuity of internal process engineers and the cooperation of Fisher-Rosemont, the first computerized process control manufacturing system was created. The results were tolerance-tight products that could be repeated batch-after-batch. An additional benefit was a reduced process time, as fewer modifications were needed. This was just what the closed-mold customers required to expand their businesses. This has become the basis for AOC's industry-leading processing control system that provides batch-to-batch consistency. This technology is being expanded to may other markets, such as marine and tub-shower.
AOC continues to invest heavily in activities that support customer's products and processes, including new polymers from its R&D Team, and field technical assistance. Economic conditions require every industry to be better, faster and to lower cost, and AOC believes this is best accomplished with a combination of new polymers and technical support that maximizes manufacturer's processes. This creates a win-win situation.
