Meet Merisol

Merisol is a joint venture forged in 1997 between two longtime partners in cresylic acid production: Merichem Company and Sasol Ltd. Merichem is the world’s foremost technical innovator in the production of high-quality cresylic acids and pure isomers from naturally occurring sources. Sasol is a world leader in the production of synthetic fuels and chemicals from coal and the largest producer of cresylic acid feedstocks. These two parties bring together complementary strengths and, in each case, a history of 50 years of successful operation. MERISOL continues a tradition of investment in technology and commitment to the markets we serve.

Merisol Operations

Merisol owns and operates two major cresylic acid production facilities. The combined operations of the Greens Bayou Plant in Houston, Texas, and the Sasolburg Plant near Johannesburg, South Africa, offer enhanced capacity and efficiency, processing flexibility and superior logistics for supplying the global marketplace. The Merisol group also includes Merisol Antioxidants, a major producer of BHT located in Oil City, Pennsylvania.

The raw materials for Merisol cresylic acids and derivatives come from a variety of sources around the world. Foremost among these are coal gasification plants. Also included are high-purity meta, para-cresols from Sumika-Merisol KK, a manufacturing joint venture between Sumitomo Chemicals in Japan and Merisol. Merisol is also a partner with Chang Chun Plastics, producing high-grade ortho-cresol novolac (OCN) in a plant located in Sasolburg

Cresylic acids find uses in resins, solvents, antioxidants, functional fluids, disinfectants, agricultural chemicals and many other chemical intermediates. BHT is an antioxidant used in polymers, elastomers, lubricants, fuels and food products.
