Thank you for your interest in Special Materials Company. Please use this website to get to know us and contact us with any opportunities or questions.

The best kept secret in the industry
People that have known us have stated that "you guys are the best kept secret in the industry."

During 14 years of operations, we have been very busy transforming our company from a small start up, to a hundred million dollar global specialty chemical company by continually growing at a 30% annual rate while retaining 95% of our over 300 customers; establishing a solid international presence with 4 factories and 20 warehouses worldwide; becoming the largest Producer and Marketer of Color Developing Chemistry in the World, the Largest Supplier of Green Solvents in North America, and receiving C-TPAT Tier 2 Certified and Validated Member approval as well as becoming a REACH Registrant and Participant.

We use all of our strengths, creativity, and energy to help and support our customers, partners, suppliers, and employees reach their goals and objectives. We really take this seriously and are aware that our continuing success is built on every interaction that we have with our customers, suppliers, partners, and employees.

Special Materials Company has seven main areas of business activity, described below:

1.Phosphorous derivatives

SMC's flagship Phosphorous derivatives business, anchored by two manufacturing plants, was SMC's first business area, and our first investment in production capacity.

Today we are one of the world's largest producers and marketers of sodium hypophosphite, hypophosphorous acid, phosphonium salts (THPS / THPC) and phosphine derivatives.

We offer a line of P4 derived products from reducing agents to flame retardants with an expanding array of specialized organo-phosphorus products.

2.Compliance Solutions

SMC launched the Compliance Solutions business in 1999 and established itself as the leading global supplier of P-Chlorobenzotrifluoride (PCBTF) following the loss of North American production. Over the last 10 years SMC has supported the market and regulatory demands for PCBTF. The company has set the bar on product quality and maintains a massive U.S. inventory; insulating the market from potential supply disruptions and making the long supply chain unnoticeable to our customers. We have highly experienced regulatory staff working on compliance as well as assisting our customer base in developing solutions.

We added Dimethyl Carbonate and Propylene Carbonate to the product mix in 2009 and are actively supporting the regulatory demands to gain state VOC exemption for both products across the U.S.

3.Titanium Dioxide / White pigments

SMC supplies a range of Anatese products, from dry milled paper grades (in slurry and dry form) to highly reactive grades for specialized pigments to a fiber de-lustering grade. Also, we supply a low cost Rutile product for coating and plastic applications where opacity is preferred over color brightness.

4.Chemical Specialties

SMC offers an array of specialty chemicals with diverse technical applications. We supply metallic cyanides for use in Electroplating and chemical synthesis; a variety of additives used in polymer, resin, and coatings production, including adhesion promoters and catalyst scavengers. In addition, SMC offers a variety of halogenated organics for use as pharmaceutical and agricultural chemical intermediates as well as reactants for a number of fine chemical applications

5.Photoimaging Chemicals

SMC supplies a line of chemicals used for production of developing solutions as well as specialized molecules used in producing coupling agents and other image processing chemicals. SMC also has a new capability to synthesize novel imaging chemicals to customer requirements.

6.Sourcing

SMC provides product and service sourcing to its client base. We have been successful at developing supplies to cover "orphaned" products in various markets; special qualities of established products and competitive supply chains, as required.

SMC brings to bear its technical manufacturing perspective, canvassing resources, strong presence in China (3 production enterprises and logistics office) and our global network of consultants and business partners to develop measured solutions to supply problems.

7.Tolling / Industrial Services

Special Materials Company's Production and Warehousing Facility located in the former mill town of Kershaw, South Carolina, was established in 2006 and is 80,000 square feet building conveniently located to deliver chemical products in the South East.

SMC Production and Warehousing Facility offers the following services: port collection, warehousing, repackaging and relabeling, conversion to liquids, solutions adjustments, neutralization, reactions and conversions, and delivery.
